Choosing a CPAP mask for back sleeping

ResMed AirFit F20 full face CPAP mask for back sleepers

Back sleeping is the easiest position for a mask: the pillow does not touch it and the hose can hang freely. What matters is whether you breathe through your nose or your mouth.

Questions & answers

What is the best CPAP mask for back sleepers?
It depends on how you breathe. If your mouth opens when you lie on your back, a full face mask such as the ResMed AirFit F20 is the usual choice. If you breathe through your nose, a nasal mask such as the AirFit N30 is lighter.
Do back sleepers need a special CPAP mask?
No. On your back the pillow does not press on the mask, so full face, nasal and nasal pillow masks all work.
My mouth falls open when I sleep on my back. What should I use?
A full face mask, or a nasal mask with a chin strap. A full face mask keeps the pressure up even when your mouth opens.
What if I start on my back and roll onto my side?
Choose a mask with the tube at the top of the head, such as the ResMed AirFit N30i, so the hose does not pull when you turn.
Do I need a prescription to buy one of these masks?
Yes. Every complete CPAP mask is sold by prescription. Place your order, then email a copy of your prescription to info@orderyoursupplies.com and include your order number so we can match it. Replacement cushions, headgear and mask kits sold without headgear do not need a prescription.
Can I return a mask if it does not fit?
Only if it is unused. We accept returns within 30 days of delivery when the mask is still in its sealed original packaging; a mask that has been opened or worn cannot be returned. Approved returns are refunded minus a 20% restocking fee, or you can take store credit. If you are between sizes, a fit pack includes more than one cushion size.
