How to Use Your FSA or HSA for CPAP Equipment

The one thing worth knowing is that the two accounts behave very differently at the end of the year, and only one of them has a deadline.

If you have an FSA, anything left in it at the end of the plan year generally goes back to your employer rather than to you. Some plans soften that with a small carryover or a grace period into the new year, but not all do, so it is worth checking yours rather than assuming.
If you have an HSA, there is no rush at all. The money is yours, it carries over indefinitely, and it stays with you if you change employer.

What to keep, and why
Most plans never ask. Some do, usually months later. Keeping three things makes that painless:
- The itemised receipt, showing what you bought and what it cost. Your order confirmation email has this.
- Your prescription, if you bought a machine. Administrators sometimes ask for evidence that a device was medically necessary.
- The order date, which needs to fall inside the plan year you are claiming against.

If your card is declined
It happens occasionally, and it is rarely anything to do with what you bought. Benefit cards are sometimes restricted to merchants coded a particular way, and some plans put a hold on cards until a previous claim is substantiated.
